The Habsburg empire never became a colonial power. Nevertheless, it succumbed to the exotic appeal of distant lands through outstanding scientific expeditions to places that inspired peoples’ imagination. These missions combined the thirst for adventure and knowledge with the exhilaration of accomplishment and, under the guise of scientific research, with the desire to set power-political scent marks across the globe.
